Dear Ms.Kapov,
I am wondering how rainbows are made? Bhea M. (Mrs. Amendola)
Dear Bhea,
A rainbow is created when light is reflected and refracted (bent) in water droplets. That's why we see a rainbow in the sky after it rains and the sun is shining! Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the part of the sky opposite the sun. Cool! There are 7 colours in a rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. (ROYGBIV) I noticed that you saw a rainbow on our classroom ceiling when you were thinking about this question!! That day the sun was shining through the window and it was shining on a CD that was on my desk. The sunlight was reflected on the CD and it created the beautiful rainbow on our classroom ceiling! Wow! Keep wondering!

Dear Ms. Kapov,
I am wondering why do we have a sun? Aalyiah A. (Mrs. Amendola)
Dear Aalyiah,
The sun is needed because it provides light and warmth. The sun is also important for people because it helps our skin make Vitamin D. We need the sun for life, heat and energy. Almost all living things need the sun to live and grow. Without the sun, Earth would be freezing and dark. Did you know that the sun helps the Earth stay in orbit. If we didn't have the sun, Earth would shoot off into space! Yikes!! Thank goodness for gravity! We usually draw the sun as yellow but it is actually white! The sun is made up of a many gases such as helium, hydrogen and other elements. Remember to wear sun protection when playing outside on a sunny day!
Keep wondering!

Dear Ms. Kapov,
I am wondering where does metal come from? Justin R. (Mrs. McGuire) Dear Justin, Most metals are found in the ground as ore. Metal ores are dug out of the ground by mining. Big machines are used to scoop up the ore. The rocks containing the ore are ground up small, and then placed in a furnace at a very high temperature. Inside the furnace the ore turns to pure metal, and is poured out into bars called ingots. Once the metal is pure, you can use it to make things. There are many things made from steel (a metal) in our classroom and your home. Keep wondering! Ms. Kapov |

Dear Ms. Kapov,
I am wondering why do leaves change colour and fall off the trees? Anthony A. (Mrs. Cabral) Dear Anthony, Plants make their food using sunlight and something called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green colour. Winter days are short and dry. Many plants stop making food in the fall. The chlorophyll goes away. Then we can see orange and yellow colours. These colours were in the leaves all summer, but the green covered them up. Some leaves turn red. This colour is made in the fall, from food trapped in the leaves. All these things make the beautiful fall leaves so colourful that we get to enjoy each year! The leaves then fall of the trees - only to grow back green in the Spring!
